Ibukun Awosika: Trailblazing Business Leader Redefining Corporate Leadership Across Africa

Few people have shaped African business leadership as profoundly as Ibukunoluwa Abiodun Awosika. A visionary entrepreneur, accomplished author, corporate governance expert, philanthropist, and global leadership advocate, she has forged an extraordinary legacy defined not only by business excellence but also by her commitment to empowering future generations of leaders across Africa and beyond.

Widely celebrated as the first female Chairperson of First Bank of Nigeria, she has become a symbol of resilience, innovation, and visionary leadership, inspiring generations of entrepreneurs and corporate executives across Africa and beyond.

Born on December 24, 1962, in Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria, Ibukun Awosika grew up as the third of seven children in a family that valued discipline, education, and integrity. She attended St. Paul’s African Church Primary School and Methodist Girls’ High School, Yaba, Lagos, before proceeding to the University of Ife, now Obafemi Awolowo University, where she earned a degree in Chemistry. Although she initially aspired to study Architecture, her academic journey took a different direction. Nevertheless, her passion for creativity and design never faded. Even as a science student, she enrolled in elective accounting courses, demonstrating an early interest in understanding the mechanics of business and enterprise.

Her professional career began during her National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme when she worked as an audit trainee with Akintola Williams & Co., now Deloitte. However, she soon realized that a conventional accounting career did not align with her entrepreneurial ambitions and creative instincts. Seeking a more dynamic environment, she joined Alibert Nigeria Limited as a showroom manager. It was there that she discovered a passion for furniture design and manufacturing, a revelation that would shape the course of her future.

At the age of 25, armed with little more than determination, vision, and an unwavering belief in her abilities, Awosika founded Quebees Limited, a furniture manufacturing company. Starting with a small workforce and limited resources, she built the business through hard work, quality service, and an uncompromising commitment to excellence. What began as a modest venture eventually evolved into The Chair Centre Group, one of Nigeria’s leading furniture manufacturing and security systems conglomerates.

Her entrepreneurial journey is a remarkable story of innovation and strategic thinking. In 2004, following the Federal Government’s ban on furniture imports, she facilitated a landmark partnership involving The Chair Centre, Sokoa S.A. of France, Guaranty Trust Bank, and local investors.

The collaboration gave birth to Sokoa Chair Centre Limited, significantly strengthening Nigeria’s local furniture manufacturing capacity. Two years later, she established the ultra-modern Furniture Manufacturers’ Mart in Ikeja, Lagos, further positioning the company as a major player in the industry. Through TCC Security Systems, her group also expanded into banking security infrastructure, providing cutting-edge security solutions to financial institutions across Nigeria.

Awosika’s influence extends far beyond entrepreneurship. She has earned a reputation as one of Africa’s most respected corporate governance experts, serving on numerous corporate and non-profit boards across sectors including manufacturing, finance, technology, energy, education, retail, and social development. Her leadership credentials are reinforced by executive education from prestigious institutions such as Lagos Business School, IESE Business School in Barcelona, The Wharton School, and China Europe International Business School (CEIBS).

In September 2015, she etched her name into Nigeria’s corporate history when she became the first female Chairperson of First Bank of Nigeria, one of Africa’s oldest and most respected financial institutions. The appointment was widely regarded as a watershed moment for gender inclusion in corporate leadership and cemented her reputation as a transformational leader capable of steering complex institutions through periods of change and growth.

Beyond the boardroom, Awosika has consistently championed leadership development and social impact. She founded the Ibukun Awosika Leadership Academy, dedicated to raising ethical and transformational leaders across Africa. She is also the convener of the International Woman Leadership Conference in Dubai and founder of the Christian Missionary Fund, a faith-based organisation committed to improving lives and supporting communities across Nigeria.

Her commitment to youth development is equally notable. Through her involvement with the Afterschool Graduate Development Centre (AGDC), she has contributed significantly to addressing graduate unemployment by equipping young Nigerians with employability skills and workplace readiness. She has also played key advisory roles in national development initiatives, including serving on the pioneer board of the Nigerian Sovereign Wealth Fund and contributing to the Nigerian Economic Summit Group.
