Former Kogi State Governor Alhaji Ibrahim Idris, who died at the age of 77, left behind a political and business legacy that shaped the state’s development for nearly a decade. Widely known as “Ibro,” Idris served as governor between 2003 and 2012, overseeing major infrastructure, education, healthcare and civil service reforms during his administration.
Beyond politics, he was a successful businessman whose transition into public service made him one of Kogi’s most influential leaders.

1. Nearly 9 Years At The Helm Of Kogi
- Governed Kogi from 2003 to 2012, one of the longest civilian tenures in the state’s history.
- Served two terms, including a re-run election in 2008.
- Remembered for promoting inclusion, equity and peaceful coexistence among Kogi’s diverse communities.
2. An Administration Defined By Infrastructure
- Built signature projects including the Confluence Stadium, Greater Lokoja Water Scheme and Confluence International Market.
- Credited with road construction and rehabilitation, bridges, housing estates in Otokiti and Ganaja, and a new phase of the state secretariat.
3. Expanding Healthcare Beyond The Capital
- Established and upgraded hospitals, including a 400-bed specialist hospital, general hospitals and primary healthcare centres.
- Sought to decentralize healthcare services from Lokoja to rural communities across the state.
4. Schools, Scholarships And Support For Students
- Constructed about 2,000 blocks of four-classroom primary schools across Kogi.
- Supported Kogi State University and secured accreditation for several academic programmes.
- Paid WAEC and NECO fees for final-year secondary school students and provided scholarships and bursaries.
5. Salaries, Minimum Wage And Workers’ Welfare
- Cleared salary arrears and unpaid leave bonuses after assuming office in 2003.
- Implemented the new minimum wage and paid salaries, allowances and bonuses as and when due during much of his administration.
6. From Businessman To Governor
- Founded Ibro Trading Company, with interests in furniture, construction and hospitality.
- Owned a furniture factory in Sokoto, Ibro Hotel and Grand Ibro Hotel in Abuja.
- Transitioned from a successful entrepreneur into one of Kogi’s most prominent political leaders.
7. The 2006 Plane Crash That Changed His Family’s Story
- Three of his daughters survived the ADC Airlines Flight 53 crash in October 2006, which claimed more than 100 lives.
- Idris later described their survival as a “superlative show of mercy” from God, a moment that became one of the defining personal stories of his life.
