Sweden’s Mattias Svanberg has entered the FIFA World Cup record books after scoring one of the fastest goals ever by a substitute.

Svanberg found the net just 18 seconds after coming on, making it the second-fastest goal scored by a substitute in a World Cup match since 1966.

Only Uruguay’s Richard Morales has scored quicker after coming off the bench, having struck 16 seconds after his introduction against Senegal at the 2002 World Cup.

Svanberg’s lightning strike ensured his name joined a select group of players who have made an immediate impact on football’s biggest stage.
