Ronaldo Questions Ancelotti’s Tactics In Brazil’s Frustrating 1-1 Morocco Draw

Brazil legend Ronaldo Nazário has criticised Carlo Ancelotti’s tactical approach in Brazil’s opening World Cup match, questioning the decision to deploy Raphinha on the left flank during the 1-1 draw against Morocco.

The five-time world champions made an underwhelming start to their campaign, struggling to impose themselves against a disciplined Moroccan side and settling for a share of the points.

Ronaldo, widely regarded as one of the greatest strikers in football history, singled out the positioning of Barcelona star Raphinha as one of the game’s most puzzling tactical choices.

The Brazilian winger enjoyed an outstanding season for Barcelona, registering 21 goals and eight assists despite missing part of the campaign through injury. Although he featured on both wings, many observers believe his most effective performances came from the right side.

Speaking on ESPN Brasil’s Resenha da Copa, Ronaldo admitted he found Ancelotti’s selection difficult to understand.

“Raphinha on the left after having such an incredible season playing on the right? There were decisions that were difficult to understand,” Ronaldo said.

Despite his criticism, the 2002 World Cup winner defended the players and suggested nerves contributed significantly to Brazil’s lacklustre display.

“I think it was the pressure of the first game,” he explained. “It was unusual to see so many misplaced passes, especially in the first half.”

Ronaldo added that the anxiety shown by Brazil’s younger players was understandable given the magnitude of the occasion.

“A World Cup always brings pressure, particularly for players experiencing it for the first time,” he said.

With Neymar still sidelined through injury and unlikely to feature during the group stage, Brazil’s hopes of winning a record-extending sixth World Cup title have already encountered an early obstacle.

However, Ronaldo remains optimistic that Ancelotti’s side will improve as the tournament progresses and settle into their rhythm before the knockout rounds begin.
