The Akwa Ibom State chapter of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) has lauded the state government for the payment of outstanding arrears owed to local government workers, describing the move as a major boost to workers’ welfare and morale.

In a statement signed by the state president of the union, Comrade Anestina Iweh, NULGE expressed appreciation to Governor Umo Eno for facilitating the settlement of the arrears, which it said had brought relief to thousands of workers across the 31 local government areas of the state.

The union also commended the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Rt. Hon. Frank Archibong, the chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) in Akwa Ibom State and chairman of Uyo Local Government Area, Dr Uwemedimo Udo, as well as the 31 local government chairmen for their roles in ensuring the payment of the outstanding obligations.

According to the union, the settlement of the arrears demonstrates the administration’s commitment to workers’ welfare and its resolve to address longstanding challenges affecting local government employees.

NULGE noted that the payment has restored confidence among workers and strengthened their trust in government, while also boosting productivity at the grassroots level.

“The successful payment of the outstanding arrears has brought immense relief to local government workers and renewed their confidence in the commitment of government to their welfare,” the statement said.

The union added that the intervention reflects the administration’s understanding of the economic realities facing workers and its determination to improve their living conditions.

It further stated that the payment would encourage greater dedication and efficiency among local government employees in the discharge of their duties.

NULGE pledged the continued support of local government workers for the implementation of the state government’s ARISE Agenda and assured residents of improved service delivery across the councils.
