The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council, has reiterated its commitment to protecting independent media and strengthening human rights reporting, as it joined key stakeholders in Abuja for the launch of CHRICED’s “Make It Count” initiative.

The one-day  meeting, held on June 24, 2026, at the Catholic Secretariat Resource Centre in Durumi, Abuja, was organised by CHRICED Radio and TV in partnership with Weltfilme, Germany, and supported by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).

Representing the NUJ FCT Council, Mr Kenneth Olajide delivered a goodwill message on behalf of the council chairman, Comrade Grace Ike. He emphasised the crucial role of ethical storytelling and independent journalism in strengthening Nigeria’s democracy, particularly as the country moves towards another important electoral cycle.

Olajide noted that the objectives of the “Make It Count” project align closely with the Council’s longstanding advocacy for press freedom, responsible journalism and the welfare of media practitioners.

He described the initiative as a timely intervention aimed at promoting rights-based reporting and reinforcing democratic values.

Speaking at the event, CHRICED executive director, Dr Ibrahim M. Zikirullahi, said the project was designed to address growing concerns over shrinking civic space, intimidation of journalists and the spread of misinformation, which continue to threaten independent media and democratic accountability.

According to him, the initiative will provide grassroots media practitioners with the skills, knowledge and tools required to produce ethical, human rights-focused multimedia content that encourages civic participation and inclusive development.

Other partners at the event also reaffirmed their commitment to supporting independent and community media. Weltfilme Project Team Lead, Mrs Julia Krojer, and the National Human Rights Commission, represented by Fatimah A. Mohammed, stressed the importance of strengthening media platforms that amplify marginalised voices and promote truth, justice and human dignity.

Disability rights advocates and civil society organisations also called for a more inclusive and rights-centred media environment capable of reflecting the diverse experiences of Nigerians.

The engagement further underscores the NUJ FCT Council’s resolve to collaborate with CHRICED, Weltfilme and other stakeholders in advancing ethical journalism, defending press freedom and building a resilient media landscape that can effectively sustain human rights reporting across Nigeria.
