Nikola Vlašić scored a dramatic late winner as Croatia secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Ghana in Philadelphia to book their place in the FIFA World Cup last 32.
Knowing that avoiding defeat would be enough to guarantee qualification, Zlatko Dalić’s men instead claimed all three points in an entertaining Group L contest to finish as runners-up behind England, who defeated Panama in the group’s other fixture.
Croatia made a bright start and deservedly took the lead through Petar Sučić, whose superb first-half strike gave the Europeans a crucial advantage. The midfielder unleashed an excellent effort that left the Ghana goalkeeper with no chance, handing Croatia control of the contest.
With qualification already secured before kick-off, Ghana showed impressive resilience after the interval. The Black Stars gradually grew into the match and were rewarded in the 73rd minute when defender Derrick Luckassen rose highest to level the scores, sparking celebrations among the Ghanaian supporters.
The equaliser briefly raised hopes that Ghana would finish the group unbeaten, but Croatia responded with renewed urgency as they searched for the goal that would remove any lingering doubts over their passage to the knockout rounds.
Their persistence paid off seven minutes from time when Vlašić met a well-delivered cross with a powerful header that found the back of the net, restoring Croatia’s lead and ultimately sealing qualification.
Ghana pushed forward in search of another equaliser during the closing stages, but Croatia defended resolutely to preserve their advantage and secure a memorable victory.
The result sees Croatia advance to the last 32 as Group L runners-up, where they will be aiming to build momentum in pursuit of another deep run at the World Cup.
Despite the defeat, Ghana also progressed to the knockout phase after finishing among the tournament’s best third-placed teams. Otto Addo’s side had already guaranteed their place in the next round before the match and will now shift their focus to preparing for what promises to be a challenging last-32 encounter.
Croatia’s victory also extinguished Scotland’s slim hopes of reaching the knockout stages, as the Scots were left unable to make up the deficit required to qualify.
For Croatia, the win highlighted their composure under pressure, with Dalić’s experienced side once again demonstrating the resilience and clinical finishing that have become hallmarks of their recent World Cup campaigns.
Although Ghana fell short on the night, the Black Stars produced another spirited performance and will take confidence from their display as they prepare for the knockout rounds, where they hope to continue flying the African flag on football’s biggest stage.
