Operatives of the Lagos State Police Command in a routine stop-and-search operation along the Lekki-Epe Expressway have led to the arrest of a 21-year-old suspected armed robber, allegedly found in possession of a human body part, firearms and stolen valuables.

The suspect, identified by police as Samson Onilewaji, was intercepted alongside five other occupants in an unregistered commercial shuttle bus during the operation.

According to the police, a search of the vehicle and its occupants uncovered a suspected human right hand, two locally-made pistols, one live cartridge, two axes, a point-of-sale (POS) terminal and five ATM cards.

The State Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Adebisi, a Superintendent of Police, disclosed that the suspect confessed to recently robbing three individuals of their belongings, including the recovered POS terminal and ATM cards.

Police said efforts were ongoing to trace and identify the victims for the return of the recovered property.

However, the discovery of the suspected human body part, which authorities said has opened another line of investigation into possible ritual-related activity or other criminal circumstances.

“The investigation is ongoing to ascertain the identity of the owner of the recovered suspected human hand, the circumstances surrounding its possession, and its intended use,” the command stated.

The police added that efforts had been intensified to track down other criminal associates linked to the suspect, noting that he would be charged in court at the conclusion of investigations.

Reacting to the arrest, the Commissioner of Police, Tijani Olaiwola Fatai, assured residents of the command’s resolve to sustain its crackdown on violent crime across the state.

He said, “The Lagos State Police Command remains unwavering in its commitment to combating violent crime and other criminal activities. We urge members of the public to remain vigilant and continue supporting the police with timely and credible information that will aid crime prevention and enhance public safety.”
