The Ondo State Police Command has arrested 15 motorists for allegedly operating vehicles with covered or unregistered number plates in compliance with the directive of the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Disu.
The command said the enforcement exercise, which commenced across the state, was part of efforts to enhance public safety, improve security monitoring and prevent criminal elements from using unregistered vehicles to evade identification and detection.
According to a statement issued on Saturday by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Abayomi Jimoh, the operation was carried out under the leadership of the Commissioner of Police, Felix Ohagwu.
The statement disclosed that a total of 15 vehicles operating without registration number plates or with covered number plates were intercepted during the exercise, adding that the vehicles had been handed over to the State Traffic Department, while the offenders had been arraigned before a competent court.
Speaking about the operation, the Commissioner of Police said the enforcement would be sustained across the state, stressing that the exercise was not intended to inconvenience law-abiding citizens.
He said “The enforcement of the Inspector-General’s directive will be continuous and is not intended to inconvenience law-abiding citizens but rather to strengthen the security architecture and improve the capacity of law enforcement agencies to effectively identify vehicles and their owners when investigating crimes.
”Vehicles with covered and without registration number plates pose significant security challenges and can be used to facilitate criminal activities, thereby necessitating strict enforcement measures.”
The police commissioner urged vehicle owners and other road users to ensure their vehicles were properly registered and fitted with valid registration number plates at all times, while calling on members of the public to comply with traffic regulations and cooperate with law enforcement officers.
