Coventry City have completed the permanent signing of Nigeria international Frank Onyeka from Brentford, triggering the transfer following the opening of the summer window.

The 27-year-old midfielder initially joined the Sky Blues on loan in January and made 14 Championship appearances, scoring once during his temporary stint. His consistent performances convinced Coventry to activate the clause that made the move permanent, with the deal officially taking effect from Wednesday, July 1st.

Onyeka arrives with considerable Premier League experience, having featured in 75 top-flight matches during his time with Brentford.

His versatility and defensive solidity in midfield are expected to be key assets as Coventry prepare for life back in England’s highest division.

The club secured promotion to the Premier League via the Championship playoffs, and Onyeka has now made clear his determination to help the team establish itself among the elite.

Speaking to Coventry City’s official website, the Super Eagles star expressed his excitement about extending his stay at the CBS Arena and outlined his ambitions for the upcoming campaign.

“I’m really excited for the new season with Coventry,” Onyeka said. “When I first joined last season, I came here with two goals — and that was to win the Championship and help Coventry get promoted to the Premier League.

“I’m really happy to now be a Coventry player back in the Premier League. I will give everything to the team, fight for every ball, fight for my teammates and bring my experience.”

Onyeka also stressed his commitment to the club’s long-term project, adding: “My ambition now is to help the club stay in the Premier League and finish as high as we can.”

Coventry City supporters have embraced Onyeka’s energy and work rate since his arrival in January, and his permanent signing is seen as a statement of intent as the club prepares for its first Premier League campaign in over two decades. Manager Mark Robins is expected to build his midfield around Onyeka’s combative style and big-game experience.

The transfer is pending final Premier League and Football Association approval but is set to be finalised at the start of July.
