England midfielder Jordan Henderson is expected to undergo surgery on his right wrist after suffering an injury during the team’s post-match celebrations following Sunday’s dramatic 3-2 FIFA World Cup Round of 16 victory over Mexico.
The 36-year-old fell awkwardly over the advertising hoardings at the Azteca Stadium as England celebrated their victory, and was subsequently stretchered off for medical attention.
England manager Thomas Tuchel confirmed that the injury is “quite serious” and revealed that Henderson was taken to a hospital in Mexico City for further assessment. The Brentford midfielder did not travel back to the team’s base in Kansas City with the rest of the squad.
Despite the setback, Henderson is reportedly determined to remain with the England camp in the United States while awaiting further medical evaluation, although his availability for the remainder of the tournament remains in doubt.
The injury comes as England prepare for a World Cup quarter-final, with Tuchel’s side hoping to keep their campaign on course despite the potential loss of one of their most experienced players.
