Award-winning American singer-songwriter SZA has revealed that she has been diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder, opening up about a personal journey she has kept private for nearly three years.
The Grammy-winning star, born Solána Rowe, shared the news on her private Instagram account, accompanied by screenshots from a neuropsychological evaluation completed in July 2023.
In her post, SZA described herself using the terms “Asperger’s” and “high functioning.” However, the evaluation itself concluded that her history, assessment scores, and observed behaviour were “quite consistent with Autism Spectrum Disorder.” Asperger’s is no longer a separate medical diagnosis, having been incorporated into the broader autism spectrum in 2013.
The report also highlighted sensory sensitivities to clothing, sound, taste and touch, as well as the anxiety associated with masking social behaviours. At the same time, it noted her exceptional linguistic abilities and superior fluid reasoning, strengths often linked to advanced pattern recognition and creative thinking.
SZA, 36, is one of the most celebrated artists of her generation, having earned multiple Grammy Awards and global acclaim with her chart-topping 2022 album, SOS. Her decision to publicly discuss her diagnosis adds to growing conversations about adults, particularly women, being diagnosed with autism later in life after years of navigating the condition without formal identification.
By sharing her experience in her own words, the singer has offered fans a deeper understanding of her personal journey while contributing to broader awareness of autism and the diverse ways it can present in adulthood.
