Taraba State University (TSU), Jalingo, has secured the approval of the National Universities Commission (NUC) to commence 24 new undergraduate programmes from the 2026/2027 academic session.
The approval followed a resource verification exercise conducted by the NUC, which paved the way for the university to expand its academic programmes.
According to the NUC approval letter, all the new programmes would be offered on a full-time basis at the university’s main campus in Jalingo.
The vice chancellor of the university, Prof. Sunday Bako, disclosed this to newsmen, saying that the institution now has 76 fully accredited academic programmes.
The VC explained that, the newly approved programmes have only received approval for commencement and will be presented for accreditation after operating for two years in line with NUC guidelines.
“We have already secured accreditation for 76 programmes. This is a fresh approval following resource verification.
The NUC came to inspect the programmes and approved us to commence them because we have the required resources. After two years, they will return for accreditation,” he said.
Prof. Bako recalled that, when he assumed office in 2023, none of the university’s existing programmes had valid accreditation, as all previous accreditations had expired.
According to him, the university subsequently presented the programmes for accreditation in batches, with all 76 now fully accredited.
He expressed confidence in the institution’s capacity to sustain the newly approved programmes, noting that the NUC was satisfied with the university’s manpower and infrastructure during the verification exercise.
“For manpower, they came and inspected both our personnel and infrastructure and were satisfied that we could commence the programmes. There is no requirement that we must start all the programmes simultaneously.
“We now have the approval. The Commission simply asked us to implement them at our own pace. That is why institutions are given two years before accreditation, so that within that period they would have attained the required level of development for the programmes,” he added.
The newly approved programmes are B.A. Sharia, B.A. Christian Theology, B.A. Philosophy, B.A. Religious Studies, B.A. African Traditional Religion, B.A. Classics, B.Sc. Advertising, B.Sc. Broadcasting, B.Sc. Journalism and Media Studies, B.Sc. Public Relations, B.Sc. Data Science, B.Sc. Information and Communication Technology.
Others are B.Sc. Software Engineering, B.Sc. Human Anatomy, B.Sc. Human Physiology, B.Rad. Radiology, B.Sc. Banking and Finance, B.Sc. Meteorology and Climate Studies, B.Sc. Survey and Geo-Informatics, B.Ed. Special Needs Education, B.Ed. Entrepreneurship, B.Ed. Sustainable Development Studies, B.Ed. Human Kinetics, and B.Ed. Health Education.
