A 19-year-old 500-level student of the Federal University of Health Sciences, Azare (FUHSA), Rebecca Kambai, has died after a hit-and-run accident along the Bauchi-Jos Road in Bauchi State.

LEADERSHIP gathered that the tragic incident occurred on Tuesday evening as the deceased was returning home after collecting personal belongings sent to her from school.

A family source said Rebecca had recently returned home for the holidays but realised she had forgotten some of her belongings on campus. Her friends subsequently arranged for the items to be transported to Bauchi.

According to the source, the driver conveying the items contacted Rebecca upon arriving at the Bauchi Motor Park near Awala Hotel, prompting one of her brothers to take her there on a motorcycle to retrieve them.

After collecting the items, the pair were heading home when Rebecca reportedly took over riding the motorcycle. On reaching the Police Officers’ Mess along the Bauchi-Jos Road and attempting to turn into their neighbourhood in the New GRA, a Sharon minibus allegedly rammed into the motorcycle before speeding off.

Rebecca reportedly struck her head on the road, suffering a fractured skull that claimed her life instantly, while her brother sustained injuries.

A First Information Report (FIR) issued by the RS12.1 Bauchi Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) confirmed that the crash occurred on July 14, 2026, at about 5:15 p.m. along the Bauchi-Jos Road in front of the Police Officers’ Mess.

The report stated that the incident was reported at 5:20 p.m., while FRSC rescue personnel arrived at the scene at 5:30 p.m., recording a response time of 10 minutes.

According to the FRSC, the crash involved a privately owned Jincheng motorcycle with registration number TFB-38-QB.

The corps said two persons—an adult male and an adult female—were involved in the crash, with the male sustaining injuries while the female died.

It added that the injured victim was evacuated to the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH) for treatment, while the remains of the deceased were deposited in the hospital’s mortuary.

The FRSC also disclosed that items recovered from the scene included the motorcycle, a women’s hair stretcher and a pair of shoes. The rescue operation was led by MI III CT Galadima.

Reacting to the tragic loss, Rebecca’s mother, Mrs Doris Kambai, described her daughter’s death as a devastating blow to the family.

“I am the mother of Rebecca, whom we just lost yesterday. It is truly a time of grief for the whole family. My daughter, my last baby, will be greatly missed,” she said.

According to her, “She was actually my favourite, and the siblings even know that. She took after me in so many ways, and I have been so proud of her. She was such an intelligent and brilliant girl. Her coming into my life was truly a blessing.”

The bereaved mother added, “Ever since she came into my life, so many things changed, and for that I am so grateful. Well, there is nothing we can do about it. God gives and He has taken away. May His name be forever praised.”

She also expressed appreciation to those who have supported the family during the difficult period.

“I want to appreciate everyone who has rallied around me throughout this period of grief. I lack words to express my gratitude. It is my prayer that the Lord will reward each one of them at the point of their needs. In their own days of sorrow, may they meet people who will stand by them and comfort them. I am so grateful. Thank you so much,” she said.

The driver of the Sharon minibus involved in the crash remains at large as authorities continue efforts to identify and apprehend the suspect.
