The Senior Pastor of the Universal Reformed Christian Church (NKST), Andyar Ishan Classis, Saghev Council Ward in Guma Local Government Area of Benue State, Rev. Samuel Gbinde, has died after allegedly suffering severe injuries during his time in captivity.
The cleric was abducted about two weeks ago alongside two members of his congregation. Although all three were eventually released after a ransom was reportedly paid, Rev. Gbinde’s health had deteriorated significantly by the time he regained his freedom.
A church member, who asked not to be identified, claimed the pastor endured brutal treatment while being held by his captors.
The source said Rev. Gbinde was immediately taken to a mission hospital in Gboko after his release in a critical condition, before he was later transferred to Makurdi for further treatment. Despite efforts by medical personnel at both facilities, he reportedly died a few days later from injuries reportedly sustained during the abduction.
News of his death has thrown the NKST Church and residents of Guma Local Government Area into mourning.
Reacting to the tragedy, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for the Benue North-West Senatorial District in the 2027 general elections, Dr. Eunice Ortom, described the late cleric as a dedicated servant of God whose life was marked by compassion, selfless service and commitment to the spiritual and moral growth of his community.
She said his passing was a painful loss to the NKST family, Guma Local Government Area and Benue State, while extending her condolences to his family, the NKST Church Andyar, Ishan Classis, and the entire NKST Church worldwide. She also prayed to God for the strength to bear the loss.
