Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, has donated N100 million to support the newly commissioned Comrade Godwin Abumisi Pensioners’ Legacy House, the national headquarters of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners, while reaffirming his administration’s commitment to the welfare of retired public servants.

The governor announced the donation recently during the inauguration of the facility in Abuja. He described the Legacy House as a symbol of appreciation for the sacrifices and years of dedicated service rendered by retired workers, stressing that pensions are earned entitlements rather than privileges.

He pledged to clear the remaining gratuity liabilities inherited by his administration before the end of its tenure while sustaining the prompt payment of monthly pensions.

The governor also highlighted key reforms implemented by his administration, including the settlement of N32 billion out of the N48.6 billion gratuity backlog inherited from the previous government and the increase of the minimum monthly pension in Kano from N5,000 to N20,000 to cushion the impact of rising living costs on retirees.

Yusuf said Kano would continue to support initiatives aimed at improving the welfare of pensioners, noting that the state had also hosted the union’s National Delegates Conference.

Earlier, the President of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners, Comrade Godwin Abumisi, commended Yusuf’s commitment to pension reforms, recalling that the governor was honoured as the Most Pensioners-Friendly Governor of the Year 2024.

He described the settlement of N32 billion in gratuity arrears as a major relief to thousands of retirees and their families.

Also speaking, the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Joe Ajaero, praised Yusuf for his consistent support for labour unions in Kano and across the country.

The leadership of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners also endorsed Yusuf for a second term, citing what it described as his administration’s performance in pension administration and other critical sectors.
