Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is reportedly weighing up moves for experienced Premier League defenders John Stones and Ezri Konsa after suffering a significant injury blow to William Saliba ahead of the new campaign.

Saliba is expected to spend an extended spell on the sidelines after sustaining a back injury while representing France at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The 25-year-old has opted against undergoing surgery, choosing instead to follow a lengthy rehabilitation programme, leaving Arsenal short of options in central defence.

Arteta is understood to be keen on strengthening his backline before the transfer window closes, with former Manchester City defender Stones emerging as a leading target. The England international is currently available on a free transfer after leaving City at the expiration of his contract.

Stones’ previous working relationship with Arteta during the Spaniard’s tenure as Pep Guardiola’s assistant at Manchester City is believed to be a major factor behind Arsenal’s interest.

Another player under consideration is Aston Villa’s Ezri Konsa. The England defender, who featured alongside Stones at the World Cup, has established himself as one of the Premier League’s most dependable defenders and still has two years remaining on his contract at Villa Park.

Both Stones and Konsa offer valuable versatility, with the ability to play at centre-back and right-back, making them attractive options as Arsenal prepare for another demanding domestic and European campaign.
