Jürgen Klopp has begun his tenure as Germany head coach with a firm warning to the media, insisting he will walk away from the job if his family’s privacy is not respected.

The former Liverpool manager was officially unveiled on Friday after signing a four-year contract to replace Julian Nagelsmann, who stepped down following Germany’s shock Round of 32 exit to Paraguay at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Speaking at his first press conference, Klopp made it clear that while he is fully committed to restoring Germany’s fortunes, there are limits to what he will tolerate.

“If you behave badly and don’t leave my family in peace, then I’ll be gone. I’ll just walk away,” Klopp said.

“I know there are other countries where national team coaches are treated even worse.

“I’m not doing this job for myself; I’m doing it for you. I’m taking this job even though I’ve seen how you’ve treated Julian Nagelsmann and Thomas Tuchel.

“I love this job, but I am always ready to call it quits if necessary.”

Nagelsmann came under intense scrutiny after Germany’s disappointing World Cup campaign, while Tuchel, who guided England at the tournament, also faced widespread criticism following the Three Lions’ 2-1 semi-final defeat to Argentina after surrendering a first-half lead.

Klopp’s appointment had been widely anticipated in recent weeks, with the German Football Association moving quickly to secure one of the country’s most decorated coaches. His contract is expected to keep him in charge through to the 2030 FIFA World Cup, which will be co-hosted by Spain, Portugal and Morocco.

The 59-year-old described the Germany job as the crowning achievement of his coaching career and vowed to devote himself fully to the role.

“Jürgen Klopp is not going to have any other coaching career after the national team,” he said.

“This is the pinnacle, the absolute high point of my coaching career. I will give everything I have.”
