Veteran Nollywood actress Bukky Wright has stirred conversations online after sharing her opinion on men’s financial responsibilities in relationships.
Speaking during a recent interview, the actress argued that a man should be able to provide for the woman he is with, saying a partner ought to be someone he is proud to care for.
Reacting to the term “gold digger,” Bukky questioned why women are often criticised for expecting financial support from their partners.
“I hate it when I hear men calling women gold diggers. What do you expect her to dig?” she said.
She went on to advise women against lowering their standards, maintaining that men who are not financially prepared for the commitments that come with a relationship should either date within their means or wait until they are in a better position.
Her remarks add to the ongoing conversation about financial expectations and gender roles in modern relationships.
Recently, media personality Toke Makinwa faced backlash sparked by her recent comments about women financially supporting their male partners.
Speaking during an interview with reality TV star Mercy Eke, Makinwa said she could not relate to relationships where women give money to men, noting that she usually shares her financial responsibilities with anyone she dates and joked that if a partner had N5,000, she would expect at least N3,000 to be spent on her.
Her comments quickly went viral, with many social media users accusing her of promoting a transactional view of relationships and placing unfair financial expectations on men.
Responding to the criticism, Makinwa clarified that her statements were not meant to define how relationships should work. She stressed that money should never be the foundation of love or a healthy partnership, adding that successful relationships are built on mutual understanding, respect and genuine affection rather than financial contributions alone.
