Chairman of BUA Foods Plc, Abdul Samad Rabiu, has established himself as one of Africa’s leading industrialists, driving the transformation of Nigeria’s manufacturing sector through strategic investments, operational excellence and long-term industrial development.

As Founder and Executive Chairman of BUA Group, Rabiu has built one of Nigeria’s largest conglomerates with interests spanning foods, cement, sugar, infrastructure, ports and real estate. Under his leadership, BUA Foods has emerged as one of the country’s most profitable consumer goods companies and is positioning itself to become Nigeria’s largest indigenous food manufacturing company.

An economist by training, Rabiu studied at Capital University, Columbus, Ohio, United States. Beyond business, he has earned recognition for his philanthropy through the BUA Foundation and the Abdul Samad Rabiu Africa (ASR Africa) Initiative, which have funded major interventions in healthcare, education, sports, water and sanitation across Nigeria and Africa. He is a recipient of the national honours of Commander of the Federal Republic (CFR) and Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON), and currently serves as the inaugural President of the France-Nigeria Business Council.

Rabiu’s vision for BUA Foods extends beyond delivering strong financial returns to shareholders. At the company’s recent Annual General Meeting in Abuja, he emphasised that the company’s expansion programme is designed to strengthen Nigeria’s industrial base, deepen local manufacturing and create a more competitive food industry capable of supporting long-term economic growth. According to him, Nigeria benefits when indigenous companies invest heavily, compete effectively with multinational firms and continuously reinvest earnings into the domestic economy.

The company has backed this vision with outstanding financial performance. For the 2025 financial year, BUA Foods recorded revenue of N1.77 trillion, representing a 16 per cent increase over the previous year, while profit after tax surged by 95 per cent to N518.4 billion. Management attributed the impressive results to disciplined execution, operational efficiency, prudent capital allocation and resilient business operations despite inflationary pressures and a challenging operating environment.

However, Rabiu insists that financial success is only one aspect of the company’s broader ambition. The next phase of BUA Foods’ evolution is centred on one of the largest expansion programmes in its history. The company is investing aggressively across multiple product categories with the objective of significantly increasing domestic production capacity and reducing Nigeria’s dependence on imported food products.

Central to this expansion strategy is the doubling of flour milling and pasta production capacity, alongside substantial investments in wheat processing. BUA Foods is also establishing a new integrated feed mill business, completing its edible oils operations, and preparing for its entry into the instant noodles market, a segment expected to strengthen affordable nutrition for millions of Nigerians. Collectively, these projects are expected to come on stream within the next year and will substantially increase the company’s manufacturing footprint.

According to the company, these investments are projected to raise overall production capacity by more than 50 per cent, while some individual business divisions will see capacity increases approaching 100 per cent. Once completed, the expansion is expected to position BUA Foods as the largest indigenous publicly listed food manufacturing company in Nigeria, significantly strengthening local food production and improving product availability nationwide.

Beyond expanding manufacturing capacity, BUA Foods recently revealed that it is intensifying its backward integration strategy to improve national food security as the company is investing in irrigation, mechanisation, improved crop yields and farmer support programmes through out-grower schemes that provide access to fertilisers, irrigation infrastructure and modern farming equipment. The strategy, according to BUA Foods, aims to reduce Nigeria’s reliance on imported food by boosting local agricultural productivity and strengthening the entire food value chain.

Rabiu believes that Nigeria’s food security challenge cannot be solved by government alone but requires close collaboration between the private sector, farmers and policymakers. He argues that improved irrigation systems, better seed varieties, mechanisation and greater fertiliser use will enable Nigeria to significantly increase agricultural yields and process more locally produced raw materials into finished food products.
