Over 600 Cataract Patients Receive Free Treatment In Katsina

No fewer than 611 vulnerable cataract patients in Katsina State have begun receiving free surgical treatment under a humanitarian medical outreach organised by the Mangal Foundation.

The free eye care programme, taking place at the Katsina Eye Centre, is aimed at restoring sight to people suffering from cataracts and reducing the burden of preventable blindness among vulnerable residents.

Speaking during the exercise , a member of the Foundation’s Board of Trustees, Mr. Hussaini Kabir, said more than 2,000 people with different eye conditions were screened ahead of the intervention.

He explained that while some patients were treated with free medications and prescription glasses, 611 patients diagnosed with cataracts were selected for surgery at no cost.

Kabir said the foundation had sustained the intervention for about eight years, restoring the sight of thousands of people in Katsina State, neighbouring states and parts of the Niger Republic.

According to him, no fewer than 7,000 people benefited from the foundation’s eye care programme in 2025 alone.

He described the initiative as part of the foundation’s corporate social responsibility aimed at complementing government efforts to make healthcare more affordable and accessible, particularly for vulnerable members of society.

“Our goal is to complement government efforts and reduce the burden of healthcare costs on vulnerable people, many of whom struggle to meet their basic needs,” Kabir said.

He assured beneficiaries that the foundation would continue to invest in life-changing healthcare interventions, especially for underserved communities, to improve their quality of life.

One of the beneficiaries, Malama Binta Ali, said the surgery had renewed her hope after enduring poor eyesight for more than four years.

“For over four years, I have been battling this eye problem, but today the Mangal Foundation has come to my rescue. I am deeply grateful,” she said.

She commended the foundation for the gesture and urged other philanthropists and corporate organisations to support vulnerable people through similar interventions.

Another beneficiary, Malam Salele Abubakar, described the support as life-changing.

He disclosed that the foundation had sponsored surgery for his urological condition about two weeks earlier and had now restored his sight through the free cataract operation.

“I have no words to express my gratitude except to thank Almighty Allah and pray for Alhaji Dahiru Mangal and his family for this kindness,” he said.

The initiative is expected to restore vision and improve the quality of life of hundreds of beneficiaries while reinforcing the Mangal Foundation’s commitment to providing free healthcare services to vulnerable communities.
