NANS Urges UNILAG To Reopen Registration Portal Ahead Of Exams

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has appealed to the management of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) to reopen its school fees payment and course registration portal for 48 hours to enable affected students complete their registration before examinations begin.

A statement issued on Saturday, NANS President, Akinteye Afeez, said the closure of the portal on June 21, despite examinations being scheduled to commence on August 10, had left many students at risk of missing their examinations.

According to the association, several students were still making genuine efforts to raise their school fees when the portal was shut, preventing them from completing payment and course registration.

NANS urged the university management to reconsider its decision in view of the prevailing economic hardship facing many Nigerian students.

The student body argued that the situation could undermine the Federal Government’s efforts to improve access to higher education through the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND).

While acknowledging the university’s right to determine the administration of its registration process, NANS appealed to the management to show compassion by giving affected students another opportunity to regularise their academic status.

The association specifically requested that the portal be reopened for at least 48 hours to allow students complete payment and register their courses before the commencement of examinations.

“However sound justice may be in principle, it ought never to be devoid of mercy,” the statement read.

NANS urged the university authorities to review the decision in the interest of students affected by the country’s economic challenges.

The association also reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the interests of Nigerian students and ensuring that no student is denied access to education because of financial constraints.
