Delta Investment Summit: Brazil To Grow Cattle, Beef Business in Delta

Brazilian agribusiness investors are to partner Delta State government to develop a modern cattle and beef value chain that will position the state as a major livestock production hub.

It was revealed that Delta possesses the same climatic and environmental conditions that enabled Brazil to become the world’s largest cattle and beef producer.

The proposal was presented at the ongoing Delta State Economic and Investment Summit 2026 in Asaba by Brazilian agribusiness expert, Roberto Fonseca Janete da Fonseca, assessing the state of capability of supplying Nigeria and neighbouring African markets.

Fonseca disclosed that Nigeria’s average annual beef consumption stands at about six kilograms per person compared to Brazil’s 30 kilograms, describing the country’s market potential as enormous.

He said the planned partnership would cover the entire livestock value chain, including cattle breeding, ranching, slaughterhouses, beef processing, cold storage, refrigerated transportation and distribution networks.

According to him, Brazil’s success in livestock production began more than a century ago when the country imported Indian cattle breeds that adapted well to its tropical climate and significantly improved productivity.

He said Brazil currently has about 200 million cattle for roughly 200 million people, while Nigeria has only about 20 million cattle despite its much larger population, stressing that improving livestock genetics and productivity remains key to transforming the country’s beef industry.

“We believe Nigeria, particularly Delta State, can replicate Brazil’s success because the climate and environment are similar. What is required is investment across the entire production chain,” he said.

According to him, increased productivity and lower production costs would make beef more affordable, stimulate demand and create opportunities for exports to neighbouring African countries.

“Our goal is not only to provide affordable beef for Nigerians but also to position Delta State as an export base for the region,” he added.

Fonseca reaffirmed the commitment of Brazilian investors to establish a joint venture with Delta State, saying the partnership would bring technical expertise, investment and modern production methods to unlock the state’s livestock potential.

He said the initiative aligns with the state’s drive to diversify its economy through agriculture and agribusiness while supporting food security, job creation and industrial development.

Fonseca however identified what he described as a major challenge in Nigeria’s livestock sector, noting that inadequate cattle supply has prevented slaughterhouses from operating efficiently, while livestock farmers equally lack sufficient industrial processing facilities to absorb their production.

“There is a deadlock. Slaughterhouses cannot expand because there is no regular supply of cattle, while ranchers do not have enough processing facilities to receive their livestock. Solving that problem is critical to attracting investment,” he explained.
