Ahead of Saturday’s gubernatorial election in Osun State, the wife of Osun State Governor, Mrs Titi Adeleke, on Monday led hundreds of women to protest against violence in Osogbo, the state capital.

The governor’s wife, in the company of the state Commissioner for Women Affairs, Mrs Ayobola Awolowo, and Special Adviser, Market, Eniola Omotosho, led the placard-carrying women from Laro Grammar School, located opposite the Government House, en route the West bypass road to the state police Criminal Investigation Division of the Osun Police Command.

Chanting solidarity songs and displaying placards with inscriptions such as, “We want Ballot, not Bullets”, “Stop election Violence”, “Election is not war”, “Vote, Don’t fight” “, Stop the killings in Osun”, the women called for an end to violence and charged eligible voters to come out on election day to carry out their constitutional civic duties.

Addressing the Commissioner of Police, Election, CP Samuel Etaifo, Mrs Adeleke demanded a violence-free, free and fair election in the forthcoming poll, adding that all they demanded is peace.

She alleged that, based on the information at their disposal, plans are underway to begin picking out their husbands, adding that certain prominent politicians in the state should be invited for questioning.

Her words: “We want peace, let there be peace, please invite them for questioning to stop killing our husbands and children. Make them sign undertakings.

“From what we heard, we learned that they will start picking our leaders up this week”.

In his response, CP Etaifo said he has the mandate from the IG to come to the state to stabilise things, “give an enabling environment for every political actor to exercise their franchise, to create public confidence for everyone to come out to vote on election day”.

He assured that security agencies will perform their duties, but also urged the electorate to conduct themselves peacefully before, during and after the election.

“If you are a manipulator of any election, that is even worse; the IG and Nigeria will not forgive you. I will arrest you and take you to Abuja because this election is a federal election, and we must get it right.

“I want to applaud you for this protest being peaceful, but I want to implore you to go back so that nothing will happen to you. I will assign my men to escort you back to where you started the protest. Etaifo posited.
