Nigeria’s Super Falcons have missed their second opportunity to secure a place at the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup after suffering a 2-1 defeat to South Africa in the inter-confederation playoff in Casablanca on Thursday night.

The defeat means Nigeria will miss the Women’s World Cup for the first time since the tournament began, ending the Falcons’ remarkable record of appearing at every previous edition.

South Africa’s goalkeeper, Kaylin Swart, produced a series of crucial saves to frustrate Nigeria as the Falcons failed to capitalise on their second route to qualification after their quarter-final exit from the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.

The Falcons were knocked out by Cameroon in the last eight, while South Africa suffered defeat to hosts Morocco. The playoff in Casablanca therefore represented the final opportunity for both sides to remain in contention for a place at next year’s tournament in Brazil.

Nigeria started brightly at the Moulay Rachid Stadium, looking dangerous on the counter through Asisat Oshoala and Francisca Ordega.

Their best chance of the opening half came shortly before the break when Michelle Alozie found space inside the South African penalty area, but her effort went narrowly wide.

The Falcons continued to dominate possession after the restart but were punished in the 56th minute when Thembi Kgatlana struck against the run of play to give Banyana Banyana the lead.

Nigeria pressed for an equaliser but conceded again in the 77th minute. South African captain Refiloe Jane reacted quickest to a rebound before her effort deflected off substitute Christy Ucheibe and found the net for 2-0.

The Falcons were handed a lifeline in the 89th minute when Jane handled Alozie’s goal-bound header inside the penalty area.

Following a VAR review, the referee awarded Nigeria a penalty and showed Jane a second yellow card, reducing South Africa to 10 players.

Ucheibe confidently converted from the spot to reduce the deficit to 2-1.

Nigeria threw everything forward during stoppage time, but Swart and the South African defence held firm to secure victory and send Banyana Banyana into the next stage of the World Cup qualification race.

For the Super Falcons, however, the defeat brings a historic and painful end to their hopes of extending their ever-present record at the Women’s World Cup.
