Five people, including four construction workers and an Islamic school pupil, have died in two separate building collapse in Kano State.
The incidents occurred on Saturday at Gaida in the Kumbotso LGA and at Kurna in the Fagge LGA of the State.
The Kano State Fire Service Public Relations Officer, Saminu Yusif, disclosed this in a statement on Sunday.
Yusif said the first incident occurred around 2:34 pm at Gaida, near Salbas Filling Station, where an incomplete building under construction collapsed on six workers.
He said two of the workers, identified as Muhammad Hassan, 17, and Khalid Abubakar, 19, were rescued alive, while four others were pulled out unconscious and later confirmed dead.
The deceased were identified as Sunusi Surajo, 18; Bashir Ibrahim, 20; Ibrahim Ibrahim, 25; and Abubakar, 30.
According to the spokesman, all six victims were evacuated to the Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital, where they were handed over to the police.
Yusif said the second incident occurred about six minutes later at Kurna, behind the Primary School, where an Islamiyya school building known as Khadija Idris Bala collapsed.
He said nine students were affected, adding that eight were rescued alive, while 14-year-old Khadija Muhammad, who was rescued unconscious, was later confirmed dead.
The survivors were identified as Hassana Isah, Usaina Isah, Zulaihat M. Gambo, Nawara Yahaya, Nusaiba Isah, Hasiya Munir, Khadija Isah and Hadiza Haruna.
The victims, he said, were handed over to the school’s headmaster, Muhammad Gambo Usman.
The Fire Service said the causes of both incidents were being investigated.
Yusif urged building owners, contractors and construction workers to adhere to safety regulations and building standards, particularly during the rainy season, to prevent further collapses and loss of lives.
