A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Joe Igbokwe, has declared that nobody can stop President Bola Tinubu from completing eight years in office, insisting that the president has everybody in his backyard.
Igbokwe made the remarks during a political gathering, where he defended Tinubu’s political strength and urged supporters across Southern Nigeria, including the South-East, to work together to ensure his re-election.
He maintained that Tinubu had fought his way to power in 2023 and could not be forced out after one term.
“Asiwaju must rule for eight years. And all of them put together cannot beat him. He was outside, and he came in. He fought his way in 2023 and came in. Now that he is inside the system, you are telling us that you will remove him? It’s not possible. They haven’t born such person. You don’t know Jagaban, a solid man.
“They wouldn’t know when the train left the station. I’m telling you what I know. They wouldn’t know. He has everybody in his backyard. Everybody!” he said.
Igbokwe also credited Tinubu with playing a key role in the emergence of former President Muhammadu Buhari, arguing that Tinubu should equally be allowed to serve two terms in office, as his predecessor did.
“He was the one, almost single-handedly, made Buhari the president of Nigeria. I can tell you the story. I was involved. Single-handedly, he made Buhari president for eight years, now that he got his own, you saying he’s going to serve for four years? You will suffer, you will cry,” he said.
He further called for unity among people in Southern Nigeria, arguing that the region’s population, educational achievements and contributions to the country should give it a stronger voice in national politics.
“With our numbers, with our education, with what we have achieved in Nigeria, nobody can dictate to us. I’m talking about Southern Nigeria. Nobody can stop Asiwaju from doing eight years. That’s why we need to work together,” he said.
Igbokwe also urged people in the South-East to support Tinubu, suggesting that votes for the president could encourage other regions to reciprocate in future elections.
“If we support in Southeast, if we put our vote and they see it, next time, they will put their vote for us. Know why Southeast is saying what they are saying now. We have been trying to bring the bridge to Southeast for years. Now, it has come on its own,” he added.
