The Hadejia-Jama’are River Basin Development Authority (HJRBDA) has donated 800 kilogrammes of cowpea and maize seeds to farmers in Bauchi.

The managing director of HJRBDA,  Ma’amun Da’u Aliyu, said  while delivering the seeds that the gesture was to reduce the hardships for victims of flood during the last rainy season to enable them adequately prepare for this year’s dry season farming.

The managing director who was represented by assistant director of public relations and protocol, Salisu Bala Hamza, said the seeds can mature and be harvested on time before the time floods are expected, adding that the seeds are hybrid varieties.

He said the move was designed to reduce the damage flood wrecked on farmers yearly, thereby subjecting them and their families to hunger and other difficulties.

Receiving the seeds, the director, operations of Bauchi State Emergency Management Agency, Dr Abubakar Umar Gabarin, said the gesture came at the right time when farmers in communities affected by floods were in dire need of success to continue farming business.

He said already, the government had engaged experts to train farmers on how best to use the seeds to maximise their benefits.

Last year, various incidents of flooding across Bauchi State destroyed over 60,000 hectares of farmlands barely a month to the harvest period.
