Everton are closing in on a second straight season‑long loan deal for Manchester City winger Jack Grealish, with the 30‑year‑old scheduled for a medical examination on Merseyside ahead of Tuesday’s 23:023pm transfer deadline.
The England international proved a key contributor during his previous stint at Goodison Park, registering two goals and six assists across 20 appearances before a foot injury cut his campaign short in January. His return now forms the centrepiece of a frantic final push by Everton’s recruitment team, who are also pursuing several other reinforcements.
While Grealish had attracted interest from other clubs – including his boyhood side Aston Villa – sources indicate that the player’s clear preference to rejoin Everton proved decisive. Toffees chief executive Angus Kinnear told BBC Radio Merseyside that the club had “remained in contact” with the winger throughout the summer, paving the way for the agreement.
The loan move comes as Everton brace for the departure of winger Iliman Ndiaye, 26, who is expected to complete a £65m switch to City – a deal that has helped smooth negotiations for Grealish’s temporary return. In addition, Everton are pushing to finalise a £4.3m agreement for Lyon’s versatile Ainsley Maitland‑Niles. The 29‑year‑old former Arsenal man, capped five times by England, offers cover at both full‑back and midfield.
Further forward, the club are reportedly advancing towards a £40m deal for Monaco and United States striker Folarin Balogun. However, their attempt to bring back Brazil forward Richarlison from Tottenham has hit a snag, with discussions stalling over personal terms.
Grealish, who joined City from Villa for a record £100m in August 2021, has featured sparingly under Enzo Maresca this season – coming off the bench in the Community Shield loss to Arsenal and again in the league opener against Bournemouth, while remaining an unused substitute in Friday’s 4‑1 victory at Crystal Palace.
Elsewhere, Everton defender Nathan Patterson is in talks over a possible move to Serie A side Torino before the deadline. The 24‑year‑old Scotland international’s destination – whether on loan or permanently – has yet to be determined. Meanwhile, a proposed £9.4m deal for Fulham right‑back Kenny Tete appears to hinge on the Cottagers securing a suitable replacement, with the 30‑year‑old Dutchman having been linked with Everton for the second straight summer.
Everton return to Premier League action on Sunday, hosting Manchester United at Goodison Park (14:00 GMT), though Grealish is unlikely to be registered in time for that fixture as the club focus on completing their deadline‑day business.
