Dom Einhorn: The Six-Language Founder Who Turned Trivia Into a Global Business

Ask Dom Einhorn which of his six languages he thinks in, and he will tell you it depends on the subject. Business happens in English. Family happens in Alsatian, the endangered Germanic dialect of his childhood. Rugby, he says, will always happen in French.

Einhorn is the founder and chief executive officer of Masters of Trivia, the global edutainment and quiz platform whose 100,000+ quizzes across 17 categories are played by 300,000+ monthly active players in 196 countries. But the road that led him there runs through an Alsatian border town, French rugby clubs, European Scrabble halls and 134 countries’ worth of stamps in two passports.

A Childhood on the Border

Dom Einhorn was born in Wissembourg, a small town in Alsace on France’s border with Germany, into a region where identity itself is a kind of trivia question. Alsace has changed hands between France and Germany four times in less than a century, and its people grew up layered in languages: French at school, German across the border, and at home Alsatian, the regional tongue that UNESCO now classes as endangered.

Alsatian was Einhorn’s first language, his father’s language, and its slow disappearance is a subject he speaks about with unusual force. “When a language dies, it is not words that die. It is a way of seeing,” he says. “I can still hear my grandmother’s Alsatian. Most children in Alsace today cannot hear anyone’s.”

That early immersion became a lifelong pattern. Einhorn went on to master French, German, English, Spanish and Italian, six languages in all, a fact that would later shape the company he built. Today he holds dual French and American citizenship and lives in Boerne, a small town in the Texas Hill Country, from which he has so far visited 134 countries.

Rugby, Scrabble and the Competitive Itch

Before the quiz empire, there was sport. Einhorn spent years in French rugby club administration, including with the club in Sarlat in the Dordogne, and his rugby career later took him to England with Hunslet in Leeds. He remains involved in the game today, helping build a new amateur club in the Texas Hill Country.

Alongside rugby ran a quieter obsession: competitive word and knowledge games. Einhorn competed on the European Scrabble circuit and in European quiz competitions, an apprenticeship in the culture of organised knowledge contests that would become his life’s work.

“Rugby taught me teams. Scrabble taught me patience. The quiz circuit taught me that knowledge is a sport with fans, rankings and heartbreak, just like any other,” he says. “Masters of Trivia is really just that insight, scaled.”

Building Masters of Trivia

Einhorn founded Masters of Trivia in 2005 as an offline trivia laboratory, running live competitions and refining question craft years before the smartphone era. The long incubation, he argues, is the company’s real moat: two decades of understanding what makes a question fair, fun and worth arguing about.

The platform relaunched globally in November 2023 and released its Android app in July 2024 under the tagline Knowledge Gamified. Growth since has been rapid, and the company was selected for the HundrED Global Collection 2026, the Finnish education non-profit’s annual list of the world’s most impactful and scalable education innovations.

Masters of Trivia is a family affair as much as a business. Einhorn’s wife, Dr. Hanh Nguyen, serves as the company’s Chief Brand Officer, and the team behind the platform spans three continents.

The Language Advantage

Einhorn’s polyglot background is not biographical colour; it is company strategy. A founder who grew up between languages built a platform that treats localisation as a first principle, with quizzes and categories designed to travel across cultures rather than merely translate.

“Most platforms are built in one language and then exported,” Einhorn says. “We were built by people who live between languages. When you have watched your own mother tongue nearly disappear, you do not treat anyone’s language as an afterthought.”

It is also, he says, why markets like Nigeria hold his attention. A country of hundreds of languages, a fierce quiz culture and one of the youngest populations on earth is, in his description, “the most natural home Masters of Trivia could ask for.”

The Long Game

At an age when many founders talk about exits, Einhorn talks about libraries. The plan for Masters of Trivia is measured in questions: expanding the catalogue far beyond its current 100,000 quizzes, deepening language coverage, and growing a live tournament circuit that already runs multiplayer competitions at major fan conventions in the United States.

Asked what connects an Alsatian childhood, a rugby administrator’s career, a Scrabble rack and a global quiz platform, Einhorn does not hesitate.

“Curiosity, and the refusal to believe that knowledge belongs to anyone in particular,” he says. “The whole company is an argument that it belongs to everyone. Preferably in their own language.”
