The Joint Action Committee (JAC) of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU), and National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT), Kaduna State University (KASU) branch, has urged Governor Uba Sani to implement the 2026 agreement with non-teaching staff unions and resolve the ongoing industrial dispute involving a sister union.

The unions also called on the governor, who is the Visitor to the university, to address outstanding issues affecting the welfare of their members.

In a communiqué issued at the end of its meeting at the university’s secretariat in Kaduna, JAC said the demands were aimed at safeguarding the welfare of its members and promoting industrial harmony.

The communiqué was signed by the SSANU/JAC chairperson, Comrade Saadiyya Mustapha; SSANU secretary, Comrade Nicholas Allen Yakubu; NASU chairman, Comrade Nina Lami Ochigbo; NASU/JAC secretary, Comrade Dahiru Musa; NAAT chairman, Comrade Aliyu Garba and NAAT secretary, Comrade Bala Aboi.

JAC called for the immediate and full implementation of the 2026 federal government agreement with non-teaching staff unions in public universities, stressing that agreements freely entered into by the government and duly recognised unions should be honoured and implemented without delay.

It urged the Kaduna State government and the university management to take necessary steps to ensure that the provisions of the agreement applicable to KASU staff are implemented accordingly.

The committee listed the outstanding demands to include payment of earned allowances, particularly excess workload allowance for eligible non-teaching staff; outstanding promotion arrears; provision and implementation of group life insurance for university staff; outstanding pension arrears; implementation and payment of the 25 per cent and 35 per cent salary increments applicable to university staff; and payment of the outstanding wage award.

On the funding of KASU, the committee reiterated the need for adequate and sustainable funding, saying the university could not effectively fulfil its teaching, research, innovation and accreditation responsibilities without adequate financial resources.

It said KASU should be allowed sufficient administrative, financial and academic independence to effectively carry out its statutory responsibilities while remaining accountable to the appropriate authorities.

According to the JAC, greater autonomy would promote efficiency, transparency, accountability, academic excellence and effective management of the university’s resources.

On the ongoing industrial dispute between a sister union in the university and the state government, the JAC expressed concern over the development and called for its amicable and expeditious resolution.

It appealed to Governor Uba Sani, as the Visitor to the university, and other relevant stakeholders to make every effort to resolve the dispute in the interest of students, parents, staff and the overall development of education.

The committee also urged the government to implement all agreements reached with university-based unions, stressing that consistent implementation of the 2026 agreements was essential for building trust, promoting industrial peace, and ensuring stability and staff welfare within the university system.

The JAC appreciated members of SSANU, NASU and NAAT for their patience, understanding, cooperation and continued support throughout the period of engagement with the government and university management.

The JAC reaffirmed its commitment to constructive dialogue with the government and university management in pursuit of industrial peace, staff welfare and the sustainable development of Kaduna State University.
