Uber Exit: Ride-hailing Drivers Warn Of Earnings Squeeze, Fear Unfair Commissions

Ride-hailing drivers in Nigeria are warning that Uber’s exit will squeeze their earnings and leave them exposed to unfair commissions from the remaining platforms.

With one of the market’s biggest players gone, drivers say they now have fewer options to compare rates, incentives and platform charges, even as fuel, maintenance and financing costs continue to rise.

The exit of Uber from the Nigerian market  raised fresh concerns among operators, drivers and technology analysts over the sustainability of the country’s ride-hailing industry amid rising operating costs, regulatory pressures and intense competition.

The development, which is expected to reshape competition among existing ride-hailing platforms, has also triggered concerns over its potential impact on drivers, particularly their earning opportunities, commissions and ability to choose between competing platforms.

A ride-hailing operator, Tunde Adebayo, said Uber’s departure was significant given its position as one of the major players that helped shape Nigeria’s app-based transport market.

He, however, said the development highlighted the difficult economics of operating a technology-driven mobility business in the country.

“Uber’s exit is significant because it has been one of the major players in Nigeria’s ride-hailing market. However, it also shows that operating a technology-driven transport business in Nigeria requires more than just having a good platform,” Adebayo said

According to him, rising fuel prices, vehicle maintenance, technology costs and regulatory obligations could significantly affect the profitability of ride-hailing companies.

“With rising ing operational costs, vehicle maintenance, fuel prices and regulatory demands can put serious pressure on margins. Competition is important, but the market must also be sustainable for both operators and drivers,” he added.»

For drivers, the exit could reduce the number of major platforms available to them, potentially limiting their ability to compare commissions, incentives and earning opportunities.

A driver, Efe Williams, said the development could create additional uncertainty for drivers who depend on ride-hailing platforms as a major source of income.

“For drivers, Uber’s exit could mean fewer opportunities to move between platforms and compare earnings. Some drivers may migrate to other platforms, but the bigger concern is whether the remaining companies will maintain fair commissions and incentives,” Efe said.

He said drivers were already contending with high fuel, maintenance and vehicle financing costs, making predictable earnings increasingly important.

“Alot of drivers need stability because fuel, vehicle repairs and other costs are already very high. If the number of competing platforms reduces, drivers will want assurances that commissions and incentives will remain fair,” he said

He further buttressed, ” Numerous times we have gone on protests over some of the discrepancies we noticed a lot of time”

A transport and logistics expert, Samuel Ifowu , said Uber’s exit should trigger a wider conversation about the business model and regulatory environment governing ride-hailing services in Nigeria.

“Uber’s decision should prompt a broader conversation about the sustainability of ride-hailing in Nigeria. The market has enormous demand, but demand alone does not guarantee profitability,” Idowu said.

He, however, noted that operators were facing multiple pressures, including regulation, taxation, infrastructure limitations, safety concerns and price competition.

“Operators have to contend with regulation, taxation, infrastructure limitations, safety concerns and intense price competition. The exit could therefore force the industry to rethink how ride-hailing businesses are structured and regulated,” he added.

Similarly, Idowu stressed that the priority should be to maintain a competitive market while ensuring that operators could sustain their businesses and drivers were protected from excessive cost pressures.

The drivers reactions come as Nigeria’s ride-hailing market enters a new phase in which the remaining platforms may face increased demand from passengers and drivers previously using Uber, while regulators could also come under renewed pressure to address the cost and compliance challenges affecting the sector.
