The NBA has levied a $30 million fine against the LA Clippers—the largest monetary penalty in league history—after an investigation found the franchise violated salary-cap rules to channel off-court compensation to former star forward Kawhi Leonard.
The league also ordered the Clippers to forfeit five first-round draft selections spanning 2029 to 2033. Team owner Steve Ballmer received a 12-month suspension from all league and team activities for his involvement in Leonard’s sponsorship agreements, while Clippers president of business operations Gillian Zucker was suspended without pay for one year for providing misleading statements to investigators.
Leonard, a two-time NBA champion and two-time Finals MVP, was personally fined $700,000. The 35-year-old, who departed the franchise this year after seven seasons, issued a statement on Instagram accepting “full responsibility” for his actions and expressing regret over the distraction caused to fans and his family. He maintained that he entered his Clippers contract and related agreements in good faith, with “no knowledge of any intent on anyone’s part to circumvent the salary cap.”
The investigation was initiated in September 2025 after podcast journalist Pablo Torre reported that a $28 million endorsement deal between Leonard and Aspiration Fund Adviser LLC may have breached league rules. The NBA’s month-long probe, concluded Wednesday, uncovered “a pattern of misconduct and multiple significant rules violations by the Clippers organisation, a prior offender of the salary-cap circumvention rules,” according to the league’s official statement.
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver described the violations as “flagrant” and stated he was “deeply disappointed” by the organization’s conduct. “The severity of the penalties reflects the seriousness of the violations,” Silver said.
In addition to the financial and draft penalties, the Clippers and their personnel will be subject to a five-year compliance and monitoring programme overseen by the league. The ruling caps a scandal that stemmed from Leonard pressuring the franchise to secure outside income opportunities, which the NBA report confirmed the team subsequently facilitated.
