A  professor of soil science at the Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University Lapai, Niger State, Professor Muhammad Yakubu, has called for the enforcement of land laws and regulations in order to ensure sustainable use and proper land management in Nigeria.

He made the call during the 18th inaugural lecture on Pedology and Nigerian Farmer: The Nexus held at the university’s campus.

Professor Yakubu also recommended the need to increase pedological research as well as soil information system because the use of soil data has expanded in management of agriculture in the country.

He applauded the idea of establishing the Nigeria Institute of Soil Science (NISS) by an Act of 2017, positing  that soil deserves more attention due to its importance in  the planning and management of natural resources for agriculture and economic development through pedological activities like soil survey and its interpretations.

The vice chancellor of the university, Professor Abu Kasim Adamu, assured that he would  sustain the  support and encouragement for  research work to enhance development of the society with new ideas and innovations that can bring positive results.

Professor Adamu emphasised the need for the youth to make use of agricultural opportunities to be active employers of labour instead of being used as political thugs or miscreants in society.

The chairman, senate committee on conferences and seminars, Professor

V.A. Kolawole, commended the 18th inaugural lecturer for the stride, adding that the committee was working hard to achieve the objective of ensuring that a professor gives his or her inaugural lecture within two to three years of their promotion amid challenges.
