Premier League Trio Eye January Move For Atletico Madrid’s Baena

Manchester City, Newcastle United, and Aston Villa are considering a January transfer swoop for Atletico Madrid winger Alex Baena, though a mid-season deal appears unlikely given the Spanish club’s resistance to selling the in-form Spain international, according to CaughtOffside.

The 23-year-old has made a blistering start to the 2026-27 campaign, netting three goals in his opening three appearances, attracting interest from across Europe’s top clubs.

Atletico Madrid have no intention of parting with Baena, who has become an integral figure in Diego Simeone’s setup. The club demonstrated their determination to retain key assets during the recent summer window, holding firm over star striker Julian Alvarez despite significant interest.

According to sources with ties to the agents industry, Premier League clubs view Baena as an attractive market opportunity and could initiate contact ahead of January, even if a summer move remains more probable.

“Baena is seen as an exciting market opportunity,” one source told CaughtOffside. “Clubs could establish contacts ahead of January, even if a deal would be more likely for next summer.”

Manchester City are understood to be particularly keen admirers of the winger, with the club looking to strengthen their attack following summer departures. The loss of Omar Marmoush and Savio from the Etihad Stadium has reduced squad depth in forward areas, and Baena is viewed as a player capable of making an immediate impact.

Any January approach would face significant obstacles, with Atletico expected to demand a substantial fee to even consider negotiations mid-season. The Spanish outfit’s hardline negotiating stance has been well-documented in recent transfer windows.

The 2026 summer window is considered a more realistic timeframe for any potential deal, though interested clubs are expected to lay groundwork in the coming months should Baena maintain his impressive form.
