Erling Haaland’s first-half header earned Manchester City a third consecutive Premier League victory, but the champions were made to work hard for all three points by a determined Coventry City side at the Etihad Stadium.
Haaland struck in the 27th minute, powering Antoine Semenyo’s cross into the far corner after Enzo Fernández had released the Ghanaian winger with a precise pass.
The goal proved decisive in a match City largely controlled but failed to put beyond doubt.
Fernández, the £125 million Argentina international, was drafted into the starting XI shortly before kick-off after Nico O’Reilly suffered an injury during the warm-up. Manager Enzo Maresca also handed a debut to Iliman Ndiaye.
Despite dominating possession with 78 per cent and completing 800 passes, City were forced to withstand a late Coventry onslaught, with goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma producing a series of important saves.
The Italy international denied Jack Rudoni with a diving header, kept out Loum Tchaouna’s low effort with a full-length stop and made another crucial intervention to frustrate substitute Ellis Simms in the closing stages.
Coventry will particularly regret Taiwo Awoniyi’s miss. The forward intercepted a loose pass from Semenyo and raced through on goal, only to drag his effort wide when presented with a golden opportunity to equalise.
Haaland could have added to his tally, with Coventry goalkeeper Carl Rushworth denying him with a strong save before another second-half effort was ruled out for offside. Rayan Cherki also struck the post after being set up by Fernández.
The victory takes Haaland to goals against 24 of the 25 Premier League opponents he has faced.
For Coventry, the defeat extended a miserable start to the campaign. The Sky Blues have lost their opening three league matches without scoring — the first time in the club’s history they have endured such a start.
Anderson was impressive in midfield for City, completing 155 passes, while Marc Guehi and Ruben Dias also surpassed 100 passes each.
City have now won all three of their league matches and extended their unbeaten run against promoted sides to 31 games.
For Coventry manager Frank Lampard, meanwhile, the result extended a difficult personal run, with just one victory in his last 20 Premier League matches.
The defeat was made all the more painful by the chances Coventry created, particularly Awoniyi’s costly miss.
City’s perfect start remains intact, although Maresca will be hoping O’Reilly’s injury is not serious. Coventry, meanwhile, will look to respond when they host Wolverhampton Wanderers next weekend.
