Erling Haaland struck in the second half as Manchester City edged 10-man Manchester United 1-0 in the Manchester derby on Sunday to maintain their impressive start to the Premier League season.

Haaland’s 60th-minute goal proved decisive at Old Trafford as City secured their fourth victory from four matches, underlining their early-season credentials.

United were unable to find a response after falling behind and finished the contest with 10 men as the home side struggled to break down a disciplined City defence.

The first half ended goalless despite both sides creating opportunities in an intense derby encounter.

City went close through Phil Foden in the 23rd minute, but United held firm to keep the scores level heading into the interval.

The visitors eventually broke the deadlock 15 minutes after half-time when Haaland found the breakthrough in the 60th minute.

The Norway international’s strike gave City the advantage and forced United to chase the game.

City then managed the remainder of the contest effectively, with their defence frustrating United’s attempts to find an equaliser.

The match became increasingly physical as United searched for a way back, with Josko Gvardiol booked in the 79th minute before Bruno Fernandes and Harry Maguire were also cautioned in quick succession.

Despite their efforts, United could not find a late opening as City held on for another clean-sheet victory.

The defeat leaves United disappointed after failing to make home advantage count in one of the biggest fixtures of the season, while City continue their outstanding start to the campaign.

With four wins from four matches, City have made an early statement of intent as they look to challenge for another Premier League title.

For United, the derby defeat represents another setback and highlights the work still required if they are to compete consistently with their neighbours at the top end of the table.
