Dikko Rejects Calls for NBBF Board Resignation After D’Tigress’ World Cup Failure

National Sports Commission (NSC) Chairman Shehu Dikko has rejected calls for the resignation of the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) board following D’Tigress’ disastrous campaign at the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup in Germany.

The NBBF, led by Musa Kida, has come under renewed scrutiny after Nigeria lost all three of its Group B matches and crashed out in the first round, culminating in a humiliating 111–56 defeat by France.

The heavy loss, which brought the team’s disappointing campaign to an end, has prompted some stakeholders to demand the immediate resignation of the NBBF board and changes to the administration of Nigerian basketball.

But Dikko has resisted calls for an abrupt leadership change, insisting that Nigeria must respect due process and the rules of the international governing body, FIBA.

“We cannot just wake up and start disbanding boards,” Dikko said.

“Whatever we do must be done in collaboration with FIBA.

“We cannot just wake up and start disbanding boards. While Nigerian law gives certain powers, we must also respect the international body because we want to continue participating in international competitions.”

The NSC chairman warned that unilateral action against the federation could expose Nigeria to sanctions and potentially jeopardise the country’s participation in international basketball competitions.

“If we dabble into the matter improperly and Nigeria gets banned from participating at the World Cup, what happens?” he asked.

Dikko’s position effectively rules out an NFF-style mass resignation or wholesale dissolution of the NBBF board in response to the World Cup failure, particularly with the federation already approaching its electoral transition.

Election remains route to change

FIBA has recognised the mandate of the current NBBF board until October 15, 2026, with the newly elected leadership expected to assume office on October 16.

That timeline makes the forthcoming NBBF election the immediate and established route for a change of leadership, rather than an administrative intervention triggered by D’Tigress’ poor performance.

The development means attention is now likely to shift towards the credibility and transparency of the electoral process and the candidates seeking to take charge of Nigerian basketball.

D’Tigress’ World Cup performance has nevertheless intensified debate over the direction of the NBBF and the federation’s handling of the national team.

Nigeria entered the tournament with considerable expectations after establishing itself as the dominant force in African women’s basketball.

The team won a record fifth consecutive Women’s AfroBasket title in 2025 and followed that success by reaching the quarter-finals of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

Those achievements raised hopes that D’Tigress could make another strong showing on the global stage.

Instead, Nigeria endured a winless group-stage campaign in Germany, with the 55-point defeat by France providing a particularly painful conclusion to their tournament.

The result has inevitably led to questions over the team’s preparation, technical direction, administration and the overall support provided by the NBBF.

Some stakeholders have argued that such a dramatic decline requires accountability at the highest level and have consequently called on the Kida-led board to step aside, despite being only weeks away from the scheduled election.

Dikko, however, maintains that a disappointing tournament result should not automatically lead to the removal of an elected federation board.

According to the NSC chairman, the federation’s responsibilities towards the national team were fulfilled and any decision concerning the NBBF’s leadership must take account of Nigeria’s obligations to FIBA.

Presidential reward paid

Amid the controversy surrounding D’Tigress’ World Cup campaign, the NSC has also confirmed that the players and officials have received the naira equivalent of the $100,000 presidential reward promised following their historic 2025 Women’s AfroBasket triumph.

The payment provides some relief for the players after the disappointment in Germany, although it does little to settle the wider questions surrounding the NBBF and the national team’s preparations.

For Dikko, however, the immediate priority is to ensure that Nigeria does not take any action that could trigger an international dispute with FIBA.

With the current board’s tenure running until October 15 and a new administration due to take over the following day, the NSC chairman’s position is that the forthcoming election, rather than an emergency dissolution, should determine the next chapter of Nigerian basketball administration.

The World Cup failure may therefore have strengthened the case for change among some stakeholders, but Dikko’s intervention makes it clear that any such change must come through the established electoral process and within the framework recognised by FIBA.
