Nigeria’s Davis Cup Team Departs For Morocco, Eyes Historic World Group I Promotion

Nigeria’s Davis Cup team has departed for Rabat, Morocco, ahead of a crucial 2026 World Group II tie against the hosts on September 19 and 20.

The Nigerian contingent left the country in the early hours of Monday aboard Royal Air Maroc for the decisive encounter at the Union Sportive des Cheminots de Tennis du Maroc.

The tie presents Nigeria with an opportunity to end a long-standing losing record against Morocco, having suffered defeats in all four previous meetings between the two nations.

With a place in the Davis Cup World Group I at stake, Team Nigeria will be hoping to produce a landmark victory against their North African opponents and secure promotion to the next level of the competition.

The players have spent the past three weeks in an intensive training camp as part of preparations for the tie, with the coaching staff focusing on match sharpness, physical conditioning and team cohesion.

Head coach Benson Ishicheli will lead the squad comprising Daniel Adeleye, Canice Abua, Michael Emmanuel and Yusuf Abubakar.

Rising Nigerian prospect Oluwaseun Ogunsakin is expected to join the team in Morocco to complete the five-man squad.

Ogunsakin’s inclusion provides an additional boost for Nigeria, with the youngster having gained valuable experience on the international stage after recently competing at Grand Slam tournaments, including Roland Garros and the US Open.

Nigeria secured their place in World Group II after a hard-fought victory over Uzbekistan in February, earning the country a place at this level of the Davis Cup for the first time in 30 years.

The achievement has raised expectations within the Nigerian camp, but Morocco represents a formidable obstacle, particularly given Nigeria’s record in their previous encounters.

The Nigerian team, however, will be looking to put history aside when the tie begins on September 19.
