4 Miners Die In Plateau Mining Pit Collapse

Four miners have reportedly died after a mining pit caved in on them at Baban Rafi in Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State.

The incident occurred on Tuesday while the victims were reportedly working inside the pit, where they were mining tin.

Bokkos Youth Leader, Daniel Tula, who confirmed the incident to Channels Television, said the victims were two men and two women.

Tula said the miners became trapped when the pit collapsed and were subsequently buried by their relatives.

He described the incident as the first of its kind in the area, expressing concern over the safety conditions under which mining activities are carried out in the community.

According to him, the exact circumstances surrounding the collapse were still being investigated, but the victims were confirmed to have been engaged in tin mining when the pit caved in.

However, the Plateau State Police Command said it had not received any official report concerning the incident.

The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Alfred Alabo, said miners often fail to report such incidents, making it difficult for the authorities to immediately verify cases.

Alabo, however, said further details would be provided once the command received an official briefing on the incident.

The incident has renewed concerns over the safety risks associated with mining activities in Plateau State, where workers continue to operate in environments that may expose them to hazards linked to unsafe mining practices.
