The Super Eagles will depart Uyo on Sunday for Guinea-Bissau ahead of their Matchday 2 Group L fixture in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) interim Deputy Secretary-General, Dr Ademola Olajire, confirmed to LEADERSHIP that the team will leave Uyo on Sunday, a day after beginning their preparations for Tuesday’s encounter with the Wild Dogs.
Nigeria secured a winning start to their qualifying campaign on Friday, coming from behind to defeat Madagascar 2-1 at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo.
The Super Eagles will now turn their attention to Guinea-Bissau, who also have three points from their opening fixture. The Matchday 2 encounter is scheduled for Tuesday, September 29, at 5pm Nigerian time.
The victory over Madagascar was secured through goals from debutants George Ilenikhena and Moses Usor, who cancelled out the visitors’ opener and completed Nigeria’s comeback.
Usor, who came on as a substitute, scored the decisive goal four minutes after his introduction, while Ilenikhena marked his senior international debut with Nigeria’s equaliser in first-half stoppage time.
With the short turnaround between the two fixtures, head coach Éric Chelle is expected to manage his squad carefully as the team switches from a home assignment to an away encounter.
Nigeria and Guinea-Bissau are both on three points after the opening round of matches, while Madagascar and Tanzania are yet to register a point. Because Tanzania are co-hosts of the 2027 AFCON and have automatic qualification, only the highest-ranked team among the remaining Group L sides will secure the qualifying ticket.
The Super Eagles will therefore be seeking another positive result in Bissau as they attempt to build early momentum in the qualifying race.
