Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, the younger brother of King Charles III, has launched legal action against Thames Valley Police over his arrest earlier this year in connection with an investigation linked to the Jeffrey Epstein scandal.

Mountbatten-Windsor, 66, is seeking a judicial review to challenge the legality of actions taken by the police during the investigation, including the execution of search warrants at his home on the Sandringham Estate in Norfolk and at his former residence, Royal Lodge, in Windsor.

The development was first reported by British newspaper The Telegraph on Sunday.

A court hearing on the matter is expected to take place on Thursday, according to British media reports. Reuters reported that the hearing would focus on the warrants and a police request concerning access to court documents.

Thames Valley Police confirmed that it was “engaged in legal proceedings in relation to warrants previously obtained from the Central Criminal Court” but declined to comment further because the proceedings are ongoing.

Mountbatten-Windsor was arrested on February 19, his 66th birthday, at his residence on the Sandringham Estate on suspicion of misconduct in public office. He was taken to Aylsham Police Station, where he was questioned for almost 12 hours before being released under investigation.

No charges have been filed against him, and the police investigation remains ongoing.

His arrest followed a Thames Valley Police investigation into allegations that he shared confidential government information with Epstein while serving as a UK trade envoy between 2001 and 2011.

Mountbatten-Windsor has denied wrongdoing in his dealings with Epstein and has consistently denied allegations against him.

His association with Epstein has been the subject of controversy for years, damaging his public reputation and putting further pressure on the British royal family.

He stepped down from official royal duties in 2019 following a widely criticised BBC interview about his relationship with Epstein and allegations made by Virginia Giuffre.

In 2025, Mountbatten-Windsor gave up the use of his royal titles, including the Duke of York, before King Charles formally removed his prince title and HRH style in November. He was also removed from the roll of the peerage.

Giuffre, one of Epstein’s prominent accusers, had alleged that Mountbatten-Windsor sexually abused her when she was 17. He has consistently denied the allegations, and the pair reached an out-of-court settlement in 2022 without an admission of liability.

Giuffre died by suicide in April 2025 at the age of 41.

Mountbatten-Windsor has also repeatedly denied knowledge of or involvement in Epstein’s sexual abuse and other criminal activities.
