Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal has congratulated Mallam Abdulhafiz Umar Barau, founder of the Abdulhafiz Umar Gusau (AUG) Foundation, on receiving the African Democracy Humanitarian Icon of the Year Award at the 2026 Democracy Heroes Award Africa.
Barau, also known as Dan Isan Gusau and Magayakin Tsafe, received the award on Friday, 9 October, at the 15th edition of the ceremony held at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel in Abuja. Assistant Inspector-General of Police Aisha Abubakar presented the award.
Organised by FDN Projects under the theme “Elevate”, the event recognised individuals for their contributions to governance, public service, business and humanitarian development.
Barau was honoured for his humanitarian interventions and community development initiatives through the AUG Foundation, which supports vulnerable communities through programmes in education, youth empowerment, food distribution, healthcare assistance and grassroots development.
In his congratulatory message, Lawal urged Barau to sustain his humanitarian efforts and continue supporting disadvantaged people across Zamfara State, Nigeria and Africa.
Other award recipients included Taraba State Governor Agbu Kefas and prominent figures from the public and private sectors.
FDN Projects’ Project Director, Olufunsho Ajagbonna, popularly known as Fajag, reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to recognising individuals making meaningful contributions to society.
Barau’s recognition highlights the role private foundations and individuals can play in complementing government efforts to improve livelihoods and promote community development.
