Fries (chips) have been a forever snack globally! However, foodies have become inventive with this snack, adding toppings such as chicken, grilled meat, melted cheese, sausages, vegetables and creamy sauces, among other condiments, to turn the simple side dish into an interesting, substantial and indulgent meal.
Known as loaded fries, this trending dish mixes crispy potato fries with a variety of toppings, providing various choices for chip enthusiasts.
In Nigeria, where chips and fried eggs with ketchup can be mainly considered a breakfast meal enjoyed by families, food enthusiasts can take it at any time and are increasingly exposed to different ways of preparing it through restaurants, social media and food vendors.
The Appeal of Loaded Fries
What makes loaded fries popular is the versatility. Diners can choose from different toppings, sauces and seasonings, creating combinations that range from simple to elaborate.
Chicken, sausages, grilled meat, cheese, peppers and onions are among the ingredients that can transform a serving of fries. Some versions feature spicy sauces, while others combine creamy dressings with savoury toppings.
For people who enjoy experimenting with food, this flexibility makes loaded fries an appealing option. Two portions can look and taste entirely different depending on the ingredients used.

Comfort Food and Weight Gain
In a chat with teacher Joe Shima, he is drawn to this dish as a result of the combination that makes it what it is.
“My love for loaded fries has to do with the combination. I like fried chips, chicken and sausage. So it’s the combination of the things I like in one meal, fried chips, sausage, chicken, fried meat,” he said.
Shima regards it as a comfort meal, and mentions that the combo is quite nice, as it is filling and quite tasty.
“That’s why I think it’s becoming popular,” he pointed out.
“Also, I understand it’s good for weight gain for those of us that lose kilos due to stress and inconsistent dieting,” he added.

A Snack or a Full Meal?
Loaded fries also blur the line between a snack and a main meal. A small portion may be enough to satisfy a craving, while a larger serving topped with chicken or meat can be more filling.
Their visual appeal may be another attraction. With colourful additions making them well suited to food photography and short videos shared online.
However, their appeal is not only about appearance. Taste, portion size, price and the quality of the ingredients can all influence whether customers choose to order them again.
Customised to Your Taste
For graphic designer Jennifer Chobs, the appeal is that this food can be customised.
“I like that they’re filling, tasty, and you can customise them with different toppings and sauces,” she said.
In terms of combination, she reveals that her favourite would be crispy fries with chicken, cheese, sausage and a little spicy sauce.
And why is this dish catching on?
“I think they’re becoming popular because they’re tasty, customisable, and look really enticing, especially in pictures and on social media,” Chobs indicated.

The Price Factor
Talking about restaurant meals in general, the cost of loaded fries can vary depending on the location, portion size and toppings. Adding chicken, beef, cheese or other ingredients may make a serving more expensive than ordinary fries.
For foodies, the decision to spend more or less rests on whether or not the combination offers good value for money. For food businesses, loaded fries provide an opportunity to offer different versions of a familiar dish, from simpler portions to more elaborate combinations.
Ultimately, loaded fries show how a familiar food can evolve to accommodate various tastes and offer diners an alternative to the ordinary serving of fries.
And for anyone looking to try something different, the appeal may be as simple as this: the fries are familiar, but the toppings make them a new experience.
