Ambassador Professor Joseph Legend Mfon has been inducted as a Professional Fellow of the Nigerian Environmental Society (NES) at the organisation’s 35th National Conference and 36th Annual General Meeting in Benin City, Edo State, in October 2026.
Mfon’s induction comes amid environmental challenges in Nigeria, including industrial pollution, flooding, climate change and ecosystem degradation.
A geologist and environmental scientist, Mfon has more than two decades of experience in environmental management, pollution control and sustainable development.
He is the managing director of Quatenary International Company Limited, where his work includes Environmental Impact Assessments, environmental auditing, ecological investigations, environmental monitoring and remediation assessments.
His areas of practice also include climate change mitigation, Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) advisory services, host community needs assessments and environmental compliance monitoring.
Mfon’s work has included environmental studies and community development assessments, particularly in the Niger Delta, where pollution has affected livelihoods, public health and access to clean water.
He holds a bachelor’s degree in geology and a master’s degree in environmental management from the University of Calabar, as well as a master’s degree in environmental geology from the University of Benin. He also holds a PhD in Environmental and Analytical Technique from the University of Belfast, Northern Ireland.
Beyond his consultancy work, Mfon serves as country director of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals Network, with responsibilities relating to climate change.
He has also participated in environmental and sustainable development engagements, including the 2019 World Environment Day in Nigeria and international conferences on peace and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
Speaking on the recognition, Mfon said his work was driven by the opportunity to protect human lives, preserve ecosystems and promote environmental responsibility for future generations.
He thanked the leadership and members of the Nigerian Environmental Society for the fellowship, saying it would encourage his continued work in environmental science and sustainable development.
Mfon also outlined plans for a 2027–2030 environmental leadership and sustainability strategy, with proposed priorities including environmental restoration, research, professional mentorship, digital monitoring and climate resilience.
