Doncaster Residents Refuse To Pay Lake Service Charge Over Transparency Concerns

Residents living around a lake in Doncaster, England, are refusing to pay a separate maintenance charge, demanding a clear breakdown of how the money is used to maintain the public recreation area.

The levy applies to households and businesses in the Lakeside area and is paid in addition to council tax. Doncaster Council says the charge covers the upkeep of the area, but some residents argue that they have not received satisfactory explanations of what their payments fund.

Steven Webster, 65, who lives on Winscar Road, said he stopped paying the fee four or five years ago because of what he described as a lack of transparency. He maintains that he is willing to contribute but wants an itemised account of the spending.

Webster also questioned why residents should bear the cost of maintaining a lake accessible to the wider public.

Concerns have grown over the site’s condition. Reform councillor Chris Kidger, who represents Bessacarr ward, described the area as being in “appalling” condition. The council has also closed footbridges leading to small islands in the lake because of safety concerns.

Another resident, Julie McLatchie, 63, said she had sought clarification since purchasing her home nearly a decade ago. She stopped paying the charge in 2018, saying she remained prepared to pay if the council explained what it covered.

Both residents want greater transparency over the levy and how it differs from services funded through council tax.
