American economists Robert E. Hall and Michael Woodford have won the 2026 Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences for research that helps explain how governments and central banks can limit economic fluctuations.

The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences announced the award in Stockholm on Monday, praising the economists’ contributions to understanding how economies respond to shocks.

“The laureates have helped us smooth out the economy’s peaks and troughs,” the academy said.

The prize, formally known as the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel, is not one of the original Nobel Prizes. Sweden’s central bank established it in 1968, and it was first awarded in 1969.
