The Kano State Private and Voluntary Institutions Board (KSPVIB) has temporarily shut down nine private schools for failing to comply with its revalidation and recertification requirements.

The executive secretary of the Board, Comrade Baba Abubakar Umar, disclosed this during a media parley in Kano, saying the affected institutions had failed to regularise their operations despite repeated notices and directives.

The schools are Zayyad Academy, Success International Schools, Sunshine International School, Perfect Schools, Al-Fa’iq International College, Mainasara International School, Shula Academy, Darul Mu’uminat Comprehensive School and Hanan International School.

Umar said the board had identified 111 schools allegedly operating in violation of its regulatory procedures, adding that the nine institutions were sanctioned after failing to comply with directives to renew their registration.

He explained that the affected schools would remain closed for seven days from the date of the announcement, warning that any institution that reopened without the board’s authorisation would face legal action.

According to him, some of the schools had also failed to comply with court directives to regularise their operations, stressing that the board would enforce the law against institutions that continued to disregard its instructions.

Umar said the revalidation and recertification exercise was aimed at strengthening the regulation of private and voluntary schools, improving data collection and ensuring compliance with approved educational standards across Kano State.

He added that the Kano State House of Assembly had reviewed the law establishing the board, which was originally enacted in 2014, resulting in an updated legal framework for regulating private and voluntary educational institutions.

The executive secretary also warned school proprietors against increasing fees arbitrarily, insisting that any proposed adjustment must be submitted to the board for approval and implemented at the beginning of an academic session.

He further cautioned schools against compelling parents to purchase uniforms, books and sandals exclusively from school authorities when the items were readily available in the open market.

Umar urged proprietors to establish duly registered Parent-Teacher Associations and adhere to approved curricula. He also warned against expelling pupils arbitrarily without informing their parents.

He appealed to school owners to cooperate with the board, emphasising that its responsibility was to promote quality education, resolve disputes amicably and ensure that private institutions operated in accordance with the law.
