President Bola Tinubu has nominated four national commissioners and two Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to fill vacancies created by the end of existing tenures.
The nominations were disclosed in a statement issued on Friday by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy.
According to the statement, the nominees will be screened by the Senate before their confirmation.
Tinubu reappointed Dr Bala Bila as the national commissioner representing the North-East geopolitical zone.
He also nominated Professor Mustapha Aliu to replace Professor Abdullahi Zuru as the North-West representative, while Bashir Muhammed Umar was nominated to succeed Professor Muhammad Adamu as the national commissioner representing the North-Central zone.
For the South-West, the President nominated Mrs Oluwatoyin Babalola, the current Resident Electoral Commissioner in Osun State, as national commissioner.
The two nominees for the Resident Electoral Commissioner positions are retired permanent secretary, Dr Samuel Akinjide Akinleye, for Ekiti State, and Zahradden Basiru Sanusi from Jigawa State, who is to replace Professor Saidu Ahmed Babura.
The President urged the Senate to fast-track the confirmation process ahead of the forthcoming general elections scheduled for January next year.
The nominations come as INEC intensifies preparations for the 2027 general elections, with the appointments expected to address vacancies in the commission and support its electoral responsibilities.
