Comrade Etimbuk Daniel, a first-class graduate and former Students’ Union Government (SUG) president, had a promising future ahead of him. But barely into his NYSC orientation in Awgu, Enugu State, he reportedly developed a severe headache before his condition deteriorated. His death has raised questions about the medical attention he received and the adequacy of emergency facilities at the camp. NNAMDI MBAWIKE writes.

The final hours of Comrade Etimbuk Daniel, a first-class graduate and former Students’ Union Government (SUG) president, have raised troubling questions about the medical attention he received after reportedly falling ill at the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) orientation camp in Awgu, Enugu State, this October.

What began as a complaint of severe headache reportedly escalated into a medical emergency, with accounts indicating that his blood pressure and blood sugar levels dropped critically before he was transferred to the hospital, where he died despite efforts to stabilise him.

His death has left family members, friends and associates mourning a young man whose academic excellence and leadership qualities had raised hopes of a promising future.

Daniel had left home with an impressive academic record, the pride of his family, and the promise of a future many believed would be filled with remarkable opportunities.

According to an eyewitness, Eneka Uwakwe, who operates a mobile phone shop at the camp, Daniel complained of a severe headache at the orientation camp and sought treatment at the camp clinic. Uwakwe alleged that Daniel’s condition subsequently worsened, necessitating his transfer to the hospital.

The eyewitness further claimed that Daniel collapsed on the day of the incident and was taken to the hospital by fellow corps members. He reportedly spoke to his mother by telephone before his condition deteriorated further.

Some corps members, who spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of possible sanctions, alleged that Daniel’s blood pressure and blood sugar levels fell critically, prompting his transfer to the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH), Enugu, where he reportedly died despite medical staff’s efforts to stabilise him.

The allegations of inappropriate medication and treatment delays have not been independently verified. However, the accounts have heightened concerns about the circumstances surrounding Daniel’s final hours and the medical care available to corps members at the orientation camp.

For those raising concerns, the tragedy has raised questions about the adequacy of medical facilities, emergency response and welfare arrangements at the camp. Calls for a thorough investigation are likely to focus on the sequence of events leading to his death and on whether earlier intervention could have altered the outcome.

Another eyewitness, Paul Etakpong, lamented that Daniel’s dreams of academic excellence and a promising career had been cut short after years of struggle, sacrifice and determination to secure a better future through education.

Etakpong said that, having endured the demands of university life and emerged as a student leader, Daniel had left home to answer the call to national service, hoping to build a future worthy of his efforts.

“Sadly, a journey that should have marked the beginning of another chapter in his life ended in grief, leaving behind unfulfilled dreams and a family struggling to comprehend an unbearable loss,” he said.

He added: “How can a young man who sacrificed pleasure and comfort in pursuit of academic excellence lose his life under circumstances that have raised questions about the adequacy of medical care at an NYSC orientation camp? How can a man who should have become someone’s husband, a source of joy to his future family and a pillar of support to his parents be reduced to a memory?

“If the allegations surrounding the circumstances of his death are established, his passing must prompt serious questions about the standard of healthcare available to corps members entrusted to the care of the scheme.”

Another respondent, who identified herself only as Esther Chimmankpa, said the tragedy was particularly devastating for Daniel’s parents, who had invested their resources, hopes and prayers in raising him.

“The most heartbreaking part of this tragedy is the fate of the parents who invested their sweat, resources, hopes and prayers in raising their son. They bade him farewell, expecting that one day he would return with stories from his year of service and plans for a brighter future.

‘‘Instead, they were confronted with the devastating news of his death and the painful reality of having to bury the very child they had sacrificed so much to nurture,” she said.

She added, “No parent should have to trade the joy of welcoming a child home for the agony of receiving his remains. Daniel’s death leaves a painful question that demands answers: who will account for the dreams, hopes and future that died with him?”

When contacted, the NYSC camp’s public relations officer in Enugu, Mrs Victoria Osuji, said she was unable to comment on Daniel Etumburk’s death.
